ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION AND ALCOHOL
For many people who drink, alcohol is a pleasant accompaniment to social activities. Moderate use - up to two drinks per day for men - is not harmful for most male adults.
In fact, according to the January 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, moderate consumption ( 1 or 2 ) drinks per day may even reduce your risk of coronary heart disease and lower your risk of stroke.
Before a romantic interlude, a glass of wine can be relaxing and help create "the right mood."
Nonetheless, a large number of people have one drink too many, and get into serious trouble because of their drinking. Currently, nearly 17.6 million adult Americans abuse alcohol or are alcoholic. Several million more adults engage in risky drinking that could lead to health problems.
The consequences of alcohol misuse are serious - in many cases life threatening. Heavy drinking can increase the risk for certain cancers, especially those of the liver, esophagus, throat, and larynx (voice box).
Heavy drinking can also cause liver cirrhosis, immune system problems, brain damage, and harm to the fetus during pregnancy.
Erectile dysfunction and alcohol abuse often go hand in hand.

Alcoholism, also known as "alcohol dependence," is a disease that includes four symptoms:
* Craving: A strong need, or compulsion, to drink.
* Loss of Control: The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion.
* Physical Dependence: Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, occur when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking.
* Tolerance: The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol in order to "get high."
People who are not alcoholic sometimes do not understand why an alcoholic can't just "use a little willpower" to stop drinking. However, alcoholism has little to do with willpower.
Alcoholics are in the grip of a powerful "craving," or uncontrollable need for alcohol, that overrides their ability to stop drinking. This need can be as strong as the need for food or water.
ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION AND ALCOHOL : FACTS ABOUT ALCOHOL AND AGING
* Some research has shown that as people age they become more sensitive to alcohol's effects. In other words, the same amount of alcohol can have a greater effect on an older person than on someone who is younger.
* Some medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which are strongly linked to erectile dysfunction, can worsen with alcohol use.
* Many medicines - prescription, over the counter, or herbal remedies - can be dangerous or even deadly when mixed with alcohol. This is a special worry for older people because the average person over 65 takes at least two medicines a day.
If you take any medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you can safely drink alcohol. Here are some examples:
* Aspirin can cause bleeding in the stomach and intestines; the risk of bleeding is higher if you take aspirin while drinking alcohol.
* Cold and allergy medicines (antihistamines) often make people sleepy; when combined with alcohol this drowsiness can be worse.
* Alcohol used with large doses of the pain killer acetaminophen can raise the risk of liver damage.
* Some medicine, such as cough syrups and laxatives, have a high alcohol content.

Alcohol may also cause sexual dysfunction, preventing men from achieving an erection and enjoying orgasm.
Numerous studies on erectile dysfunction and alcohol have indicated that alcohol abuse in men can cause impaired testosterone production and shrinkage of the testes (i.e. testicular atrophy). Those changes can result in impotence, infertility, and reduced male secondary characteristics (e.g. reduced facial and chest hair, breast enlargement, and a shift in fat deposition from the abdomen to the hip area).
When alcohol is broken down in the body, it may also interfere with normal sperm structure and movement.
Heavy drinkers may find they have fewer long term relationships, they are less able to find and maintain sexual partners, and their personal issues and problems make them less attractive in the eyes of others.
In addition, it's hard to communicate and develop a meaningful relationship with your partner, when alcohol prevents you from thinking clearly and behaving in an appropriate and thoughtful manner.

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION AND ALCOHOL : EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL
Even drinking a small amount of alcohol can impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time. It can increase the risk of work and household accidents, including falls and hip fractures. It also adds to the risk of car crashes.
Heavy drinking over time also can cause certain cancers, liver cirrhosis, immune system disorders, and brain damage. Alcohol can make some medical concerns hard for doctors to find and treat.
For example, alcohol causes changes in the heart and blood vessels. These changes can dull pain that might be a warning sign of a heart attack.
Drinking also can make older people forgetful and confused. These symptoms could be mistaken for signs of Alzheimer's disease. For people with diabetes, drinking affects blood sugar levels.
People who abuse alcohol also may be putting themselves at risk for serious conflicts with family, friends, and co-workers. The more heavily they drink, the greater the chance for trouble at home, at work, with friends, and even with strangers.

HOW TO KNOW IF SOMEONE HAS A DRINKING PROBLEM
Not everyone who drinks regularly has a drinking problem, and not all problem drinkers drink every day. You may want to get help if you or a loved one:
* Drink to calm your nerves, forget your worries, or reduce depression.
* Gulp down drinks.
* Frequently have more than one drink a day.
* Lie about or try to hide drinking habits.
* Hurt yourself, or someone else, while drinking.
* Need more alcohol to get high.
* Feel irritable, resentful, or unreasonable when not drinking.
* Have medical, social, or financial worries caused by drinking.
ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION AND ALCOHOL :
THE DECISION TO GET HELP
Accepting the fact that help is needed for an alcohol problem may not be easy. But keep in mind that the sooner you get help, the better are your chances for a successful recovery.
Any concerns you may have about discussing drinking related problems with your health care provider may stem from common misconceptions about alcoholism and alcoholic people.
In our society, the myth prevails that an alcoholic problem is a sign of moral weakness. As a result, you may feel that to seek help is to admit some type of shameful defect in yourself. In fact, alcoholism is a disease that is no more a sign of weakness than is asthma. Moreover, taking steps to identify a possible drinking problem has an enormous payoff - a chance for a healthier, more rewarding life.
ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION AND ALCOHOL : TREATMENT
The type of treatment you receive depends on the severity of your alcoholism and the resources that are available in your community.
Treatment may include detoxification (the process of safely getting the alcohol out of your system); taking doctor prescribed medications, and individual and/or group counseling.
Because the support of spouse and family members is important to the recovery process, many programs also offer brief marital counseling and family therapy as part as part of the treatment process.
