In the latter half of the 1800’s the use of electricity, in different forms, gained popularity as a means of healing numerous ailments. Erectile dysfunction, or impotence, was amongst those health disorders often treated by electrical currents.
The following article contains excerpts from the book “Plain Home Talk” : Embracing “Medical Common Sense” relating to erectile dysfunction and electrical therapy. The book was published in 1891 and written by Edward B. Foote, M.D.
“The causes of impotency are as numerous as those which produce nervous inharmony of any kind. Perhaps the most common are, intemperance in the use of stimulating food and drinks, masturbation, and sexual excess.”
“Various medical devices have been resorted to by physicians to cure the disease, and it seems to me that no argument is needed to prove their inefficiency. The seat of the disease, as I have already shown, is not in the genital organs, except in occasional cases.” “In the great majority of them the disease is the result of a want of proper communication between the cerebellum and the organs of procreation. What is wanted, then, is some remedy, or remedies calculated to reestablish that connection.” “Is it not self evident that electricity in some form is alone capable of effecting this result?” “All that is necessary is to stimulate them into activity, and render them once more conductors of the telegraphic messages. In all other forms of paralysis, it is universally conceded that electricity is the true remedy. Then why not in this?” “Galvanism, electro-magnetism, and other forms of electricity are now extensively employed in the best institutions of the old world, and according to the testimony of Faraday, Golding Bird, Donnovan, Le Roy d’Eliolle, Cross, Palaprat, Smee, Matteucci, and other distinguished medical writers, with the most flattering results.”
