You can have hypertension, or high blood pressure, and still feel just fine.

In fact, 30 percent of those with high blood pressure, are unaware they have the condition.

That's because, unlike erectile dysfunction, which is a noticeable disorder, high blood pressure does not cause symptoms that you can see or feel.

But, high blood pressure or hypertension, sometimes called "the silent killer," is a major health problem. If not treated, it can lead to erectile dysfunction, stroke, heart disease, eye problems, or kidney failure.

The good news is that there are ways you can prevent high blood pressure. And, if you already have high blood pressure, there are ways to control it and prevent its complications.

WHAT IS HYPERTENSION?

Blood pressure measures the force of blood against the walls of your blood vessels. Blood pressure that remains high over time is called hypertension. Extra fluid in your body increases the amount of fluid in your blood vessels and makes your blood pressure higher.

Narrow or clogged blood vessels also raise your blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, see your doctor regularly.

CHECKING YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

When your doctor checks your blood pressure and tells you the result, he or she will say two numbers. The numbers are written one above, or before, the other.

The first, or top, number is your systolic pressure. This tells you how much the blood flowing through your blood vessels pushes against the vessel walls as your heart beats.

The second, or bottom number, measures the pressure while the heart relaxes between beats. This is the diastolic pressure.

If your blood pressure is normal, your systolic pressure is less than 120 and your diastolic pressure is less than 80 - for example, 119/79.

DO YOU HAVE HYPERTENSION?

One reason to have regular checkups by your doctor is to check your blood pressure. If you have only a slightly higher reading - such as top number between 120 and 139, or the bottom number between 80 and 89, you have prehypertension. This is also an indicator that you may be at risk for developing high blood pressure.

Your health care provider will probably want you to make changes in your daily habits to try and lower those numbers.

While it is known that men with high blood pressure are at risk for erctile dysfunction, recent findings discussed at the American Society of Hypertension's Twentieth Annual Scientific Meeting in May, 2005, brought to light that ED was also frequent in men with high "normal" blood pressure, included under the term "prehypertension."

Your doctor will say your blood pressure is high when it measures 140/90 or higher at two or more checkups. He may also ask you to check your blood pressure at home at different times of the day.

If the numbers are still high after several checks, your health care provider will probably suggest medicine, changes in your diet, and exercise.

WHAT IF JUST THE FIRST NUMBER IS HIGH?

For older people, the first number (systolic) is high (greater than 140), but the second number is normal (less than 90). This problem is called isolated systolic hypertension. Isolated systolic hypertension is the most common form of high blood pressure in older people.

Isolated systolic hyper-tension can lead to serious health problems. It should be treated in the same way as regular high blood pressure. If your systolic pressure is over 140, ask your doctor how you can lower it.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN HYPERTENSION AND ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

The constriction of blood vessels is a common underlying factor in both hypertension and ED.

ED is often one of the first signs of poor blood flow and impaired circulation in the body.

We should be aware that ED could be an indicator of larger, more serious health challenges facing us two or three years in the future.

Recent surveys have shown that 82 percent of men, 35 and older, who have hypertension or high blood pressure, were not aware of it's connection to ED. Many were also unaware of the connection between ED and other health problems that commonly affect men, such as high cholesterol and diabetes.

"These are important findings for the millions of men in the U.S. who suffer from hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes, as any of these medical conditions can lead to erectile dysfunction. In my clinical experience, men often feel more comfortable visiting the doctor for a condition like hypertension."

"If more men understood the link between these medical conditions, which are treatable, they might have an easier time talking to their doctor," said Dr. Matt Rosenberg, medical director at Mid-Michigan Health Centers in Jackson, MI.

CAN YOU PREVENT OR CONTROL HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE?

More than half of Americans over age 60 have high blood pressure. But, that does not mean it is part of normal aging. Try these healthy habits to help you control or prevent high blood pressure.

* Cut out cigarettes.

* Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low fat dairy foods. A healthy diet is important. To control high blood pressure, eat a diet rich in these foods. * Cut down on salt and sodium. Most Americans eat more salt and sodium than they need. A low salt diet might help lower your blood pressure. Talk with your doctor about your salt intake.

* Drink less alcohol. Drinking alcohol can affect your blood pressure. The effect is different depending upon body size. As a general rule, men shouldn't have more than two drinks a day. Excessive drinking also leads to erectile dysfunction.

* Follow your doctor's orders. If lifestyle changes alone do not control your blood pressure, your doctor may tell you to take blood pressure pills. You may need to take medicine for the rest of your life. Speak to your doctor.
