SMOKING AND ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
Study after study continues to show evidence that smoking may be a major cause of erectile dysfunction.
Smoking affects the blood flow in our veins and arteries.
It creates the build up of plaque on the inner lining of arterial walls . This obstructs the blood flow and
causes a host of circulatory problems throughout the body, including erectile dysfunction.
According to Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, "smokng accelerates atherosclerosis and is a potent risk factor for heart disease. It just stands to reason that what harms blood vessels in one area of the body harms them in other areas too."
Katz expressed hope that fear of ED might actually encourage men to throw away their cigarettes. "Perhaps men, not motivated to quit for fear of heart attack or lung cancer, will be motivated by this," he said.
"It may be difficult to give up cigarettes but it almost invariably proves far more difficult to live with the consequences of not doing so," he added.

Two research projects conducted in recent years confirm the findings of earlier studies , linking ED directly to smokng.
In one study regarding smoking and erectile dysfunction, reported at the American Heart Associations annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology
and Prevention, in 2003, researchers examined data on 4,764 Chinese men, average age 47+, who responded to questions
on both the number of cigarettes they used daily and the quality of their sexual relations.
Among the findings:
* Men who went through more than 20 cigarettes a day had a 60% higher risk of ED, compared to men who never smoked.
* Men who currently and formerly smoked were about 30% more likely to suffer from impotence than non-users.
In another study, conducted in Australia, data was collected on nearly 8,400 men aged 16 to 59. Once again the findings concerning smoking and erectile dysfunction were similar.
The researchers revealed that men who went through one pack or less a day were 24% more likely to report difficulties maintaining an erection than non-smokers.
Those who consumed a pack or more cigarettes daily were 39% more likely to be impotent than non-smokrs.
These findings, and similar studies, continue to point to a significant association between smoking and erectile dysfunction, which becomes stronger with the increasing numbers of cigarettes consumed daily.
In the words of Professor Alan Riley, former chairman of the Impotence Association of Great Britain:
"Just as cigarettes damage your heart, every cigarette you smoke reduces the volume of blood flow to the penis. In many cases this damage cannot be reversed and the result is impotence.
Young men think they are invincible, but as long as
they carry on smoking, the damage is getting worse."

Yes. But the sooner one makes an immediate stop, the better his chances are.
